Beef Short Rib, $30: Vic's Meat Market, Pyrmont. Sydney Food Blog Review.

There was a period of time when I was absolutely obsessed with barbecue. Like barbecue errthang. Meat, marinaded, plain, sausages, basted, wings, foiled…I mean, ERRTHANG. Because it’s all about that smoke, ’bout that smoke, no trouble.

So when my Instagram just exploded with pictures of Vic’s Meat Market’s luscious, shiny, barbecued thangs, I just had to put it on the Eat List.


The Order:

Beef Short Rib, $30
Pasture fed beef ribs with pickles, sauce and selection of sides.

Chicken wings basket, $10

Smoked sausages, $10

Barq’s root beer, $4 each


The Food:

Vic’s has always been known for their meat and quality, and you just know that things are going to have a certain standard walking in.

The Chicken Wing Basket, $10, was only very lightly smoky, covered in peppery spices that added a crunch to the tender perfection of nature that is the chicken wing.

The Smoked Sausages were juicy, but not particularly smoky. That barbecue sauce that it was served with, though, really brought things together and made it ever so easy to keep picking at it.

And the main event – the Beef Ribs, $30. Beef ribs are my favourite kind of ribs EVAHHHH which makes me automatically partial to this dish. I love mixing it up with the sides, even though it feels like I’ve had, well, beefier ribs in other places. The tangy pickles – McClune’s – provided a really nice counterpoint to the meatfest, too, which kept me eating way more than I should.

And no that wasn’t a Magic Mike joke.

The Service:

Maybe I’ve been to one too many Brazillian barbecues, but I was kind of missing a sense of “go on, you know you wanna” when I ordered at the counter (it’s not table service, by the way). Don’t get me wrong, it was perfectly pleasant and polite, but there is an unabashed joy and fun that I associate with barbecued meats that somehow I expect from the service too.

Although I do really like that they give out individual packets of wet wipes with your meal. That, for “exuberant” eaters like myself, was very thoughtful.

Value for money:

How much would you pay for beef ribs? There was much chest clutching when I told my friends that the platter of rib and sides cost $30. Yeah, it’s not a typo. 1 rib. Even with what I like to call “CBD tax”, it’s a bit steep for me. I can understand that barbecue takes a lot of time, effort and resources, but I think there are a few other barbecue joints that provide a similar quality, for a lower price. Mind you, I didn’t hesitate dropping $30 on it to give it a try, but I would definitely think twice about paying $30 to eat it again.

The wings and sausages were priced okay, but added to the fact that you’d have to schlepp all the way out to the fish markets to have this? Not sure that there aren’t other things that I might make the effort for, instead.

Value for money: 0.5/1


The Vibe:

Plenty of sunshine, open spaces and dark wood make for a classy approach to the kitschy barbecue dives that are glamourised on the travel channel. It’s got a really chilled vibe that makes you feel like you could spend all afternoon there, which is no mean feat considering it’s a restaurant right next to a car park. Not the MOST cozy of places, but quite nice enough.

And finally,

If you’re the type to actually do your fish shopping at the fish markets – the parking alone is cray cray – then you might be happy to know that you can just do your meat shopping whilst you’re at it, too. The butchers are pretty helpful, and actually have a wide range of culinary knowledge, which is a step up from many a local butcher I’ve spoken to.

Be warned though, the meat is still “fish market produce” prices, but if it works for you, then there’s no judgement here. Meanwhile, I’m off to get some oysters.

The world of food is fantastically varied. You just know, KNOW, that wherever you go, someone has a specialty and it’s going to be just delicious. I mean Asia has street food, America’s got diners (amongst other things), and Australia?

Australia’s got talent brunch.

So it’s fitting that Good Food Month celebrates that with Best of Brunch, where some of Australia’s best and hipsterest come together to feed us the most important meal of the day.

You know, the one we eat after sleeping in and while nursing a hangover?

Ruby’s Diner was first up to bat, with a very responsible Poached Eggs and Kale Salad. Very light, very healthy, and very keeping in with the theme of the Pyrmont Growers’ Markets right round the corner. It almost felt too healthy, except the kale salad was actually quite delicious, so points for that.

And perfect to whet your appetite for the courses to come.

But you know what you have with grits? FRIED F**KING CHICKEN. And not just any chicken either. It was the famed Hartsyard fried chicken. And waffles. But really, we all know who’s the star here. Crispy juicy fried chicken, sweet fluffy waffles, maple syrup…this elevated the meal to a had-a-sexy-night-then-roll-out-of-bed sorta brunch. I’ve always wondered about the hype, and now I know.

Oh boy, do I know.

Then, it was over all too soon. LuMi Dining put forward an apple strudel, which, while it might have been a perfectly respectable strudel, wasn’t quite at the level of the fried chicken. And I’m beginning to fear that nothing will ever live up to the fried chicken, and my life will be sad.

That being said, the apple strudel isn’t quite what I’d go to LuMi for, necessarily. The rest of the menu is much better. Much.

And to take home, like a cool, new-age version of the petit fours that you get at the end of fancy restaurant meals, a salted chocolate chip cookie from West Juliett. The reveal of this brought many ooh’s and aah’s at the table, even though I hadn’t really heard of West Juliett before this. I know, #foodbloggerfail.

Either way, the cookie never actually made it home. Soft chewy pieces with melty bits of chocolate all through it? YAAAASSSSSS. I absolutely demolished it. Demolished.

Most important meal of the day: Sokyo, Pyrmont

I am not a breakfast person. Far from it. And whether not it’s contributed to my ever burgeoning waistline – although I do think it’s more to do with all the delicious food that I’m inclined to consume – I still maintain that I will only eat breakfast if there’s something delicious that’s worth the effort it takes to wake up in the morning.

Can you tell that I’m not a morning person?

But you know which culture does breakfast really well? The Japanese, that’s who. With rice, fish, pickles and soup, they really give meaning to “feasting like a king”. And if there’s any day where I get to have breakfast like royalty, it’s my birthday, dammit!

So Sam brings me to Sokyo, where they offer up dishes like an Eggs Benedict, complete with crispy bacon, brioche and miso hollandaise, and the more traditional Choushoku breakfast, with grilled fish (pictured above), pickles, rice, miso soup, chawanmushi and edamame beans.

The Choushoku Breakfast was, well, it was a bit lacking, especially with my high HIGH hopes. There was a ton of rice with not quite enough to go with it, throwing the whole tray off balance. What was there, though, was insanely delicious. The grilled tooth fish was silky smooth and buttery, and the chawanmushi was cooked just rice to showcase the sweet egg custard. It just didn’t have…enough of it to truly hit the spot. Not for a glutton guts like me, anyway.

The Eggs Benedict ticked most of the boxes for what you want from an eggs benedict – buttery hollandaise, unctuous brioche, crispy bacon etc – but I was kinda missing the fusion elements of it. Sure, the hollandaise has miso in it, but it wasn’t particularly salient when had together with the poached eggs and brioche.

That’ll teach me to have high expectations. DAMN YOU BREAKFAST.

Although, I hear the dinner is extremely good…

Korean Tacos from Poklol at the Lunar Markets

The moon is said to do strange things to people: it brings out the monsters, it brings out the crazy…and it brings out the HUNGRY.

Oh wait, that’s just a normal state for me.

But markets usually involve me getting up early in the morning, and honey child, I ain’t no morning person. Which is why night markets have always been a favourite of mine – from the annual Night Noodle Markets of Good Food Month, to the weekly Chinatown markets – and I’m so excited that NSW Food and Wine Festival has just started the inaugural Lunar Markets, to celebrate Chinese New Year!

They’ve selected a cool mix of seasoned market stall holders and food truck operators, newbies on the Sydney food scene, and even some favourites from interstate.

I haven’t eaten from Poklol before, but their selection of fusion foods certainly inspire an appetite. The tacos that we were given to sample were generously filled with marinated beef and pork, and had that distinct Korean mix of sweet and salty.

Fat Noodle also joined the Lunar Market fray, offering up a mixture of crispy bites and stir-fried dishes. We were given Crispy Dumplings and Spring Rolls to sample, all hot and steaming from the fryer. It may not be knock your socks off amazing in terms of dumplings, but we already know that Fat Noodle produces consistent, reliable, quality food. So there’s that.

No Salt and Pepper Tofu on the market menu though. /sad face. That, you have to cross the road to The Star to get.

All the way from their initial debut at the markets in Brisbane, and then interstate in Melbourne, Zagyoza has brought a variety of 9 gyozas for your sampling pleasure. As a base standard pork dumplings were pretty nice, their seafood dumplings – made with prawn and squid meat – were better, and their vegan black bean dumplings interesting. I personally am a bit so so about the texture myself, but it’s so much better than a LOT of other vegan food that I’ve tried.

HOY frickin’ PINOY is back in the building!!! Since I first tried them at the Winter Night Markets in Melbourne, I’ve been stalking them like a woman possessed, sniffing the air for that smoky smell of charcoal like a wolf.

See? I told you that the moon does strange things to people.

They are the reason I would seriously consider moving to Melbourne, and that is no exaggeration. Their menu is short, but it packs a punch. Their chicken skewers are coated in a sweet soy glaze, and their pork skewers in a banana ketchup glaze. Never in my life have I been such a fan of chicken.

And their showing at both the SMH Night Noodle Markets and The Age Night Noodle Markets shows amazing consistency – here’s hoping that they’re soon going to make a permanent expansion up to Sydney.
