I swear, all the ice cream advertising I’ve been exposed to all my life must be working, because when the days have been hot, sticky, and yucky, as they’ve been, all I want is a cool, sweet, frozen treat, to chase away the summer heat.

Oh who am I kidding. I don’t need a reason to want dessert.

Which is why the invite from Cloud 9 Chocolate Cafe to sample their menu could not have come at a better time!

HELLOOO CHOCOLATE!

Gelato SliderGelato Sliders, $6

Located in Newtown, Cloud 9 Chocolate Cafe aims to offer up quality chocolate desserts at affordable prices. Co-founder Anne McGlinchey says that they wanted to created a cafe that was bright and airy; that people would want to visit both in summer and winter. And she would know: she’s spent the last 20 years in the chocolate industry, working with Darrell Lea, and then Lindt to set up their chocolate cafes throughout Australia, and internationally.

The Gelato Sliders, $6 (pictured above), are boasted as their hero menu item, and it basically involves a scoop of gelato sandwiched between two cookies, or brownies.

Pro tip: choose two different flavours of cookies for maximum flavour impact! Suggested by the amazingly friendly dude at the counter. /thumbs up!

I picked the white chocolate and cranberry, and a pecan cookie to sandwich an apple crumble gelato. Because I miss Christmas. It created a super-rich flavour cocktail, and a fun but sticky mess! It was much easier to eat uh, deconstructed, with a spoon and small bites, because it kinda squished all over my fingers.

Or bring wet wipes. You always can do with more wet wipes.

Chocolate Meringue and mousse cakeChocolate Mousse and Meringue Cake, $6

The flourless chocolate cakes were much more manageable, both in terms of richness, and ease-of-consumption. This time, we had a Meringue and Chocolate Mousse cake, which ate like a decadent chocolatey Eton mess, especially with the sides of whipped cream and strawberries.

Brownie Blitz SundaeBrownie Blitz Sundae, $7

And for the ultimate sweet tooths amongst us, there is the Brownie Blitz Sundae, $7. Pieces of chocolate and blonde brownies are smashed in with melted chocolate, frozen berries and dark chocolate gelato, into a easy-to-carry takeaway cup. At $7, it’s ticks all the boxes for value-for-money: it’s rich, satisfying, and never-ending. I found it difficult to dig my way to the bottom of the cup, and even with a girlfriend to help, it was super difficult to get all the way through. Of course, we did have two other desserts to share, but it still was incredibly rich.

Just look at our food-coma chocolate-high expressions.

From the crowds that were in there when we went, it looks like Cloud 9 Chocolate Cafe isn’t going anywhere. My advice? Try one menu item at a time, and bring a friend to share it with!
