I’ve often said that I’m on a diet all year so that I am allowed to gorge during Good Food Month – and with events like the Night Noodle Markets and Asia Town, I think I’ve gotten my diet’s worth.

But it doesn’t mean I can’t still use the excuse to get some breakfast!! Cause a girl’s gotta eat right?

As part of Good Food Month’s Breakfast Club, Single Origin – Surry Hills hipster coffee extraordinnaire – is offering up a $20 breakfast deal: Watermelon and strawberry shot, with smoked trout, avocado and poached egg parcel on organic quinoa, herb and nut salad, and a honeycomb-infused Geisha cold brew. PLUS a coffee or tea.

Watermelon and strawberry shotWatermelon and Strawberry Shot

The shot gets served first, which is really a refreshing puree of watermelon and strawberry, to whet your appetite.

Then the main event, which is the smoked trout, avocado and poached egg parcel, on an organic quinoa, herb and nut salad. Whew, that was a mouthful. The parcel, when cut open, revealed a poached egg that had been wrapped in a layer of avocado, before being wrapped in an enigma slices of smoked trout. The quinoa, spiked with aromatic dill that brought out the lovely smokiness in the trout, was cooked to al dente, and provided a great texture to the smooth mix of egg and avocado.

And because Single Origin Roasters are known for their specialty coffees, any deal that they provide has to come with coffee yes? Well, in this case it comes in the form of a Honeycomb-infused Geisha Cold Brew – Manantiales Del Frontino Colombia Geisha (with fruity notes of passionfruit, mango and papaya) is put through a cold brew system with honeycomb infused water.

Honeycomb like the thing in a violet crumble, not the stuff that has beeswax. I asked. =)

This was truly something special. I’m not the biggest coffee drinker – too many bad experiences with burnt coffee or milk – and this provided an experience that I wouldn’t have immediately pegged as coffee. This – to my untrained coffee palate – tasted like muted fruits, almost like it was the impressionist painting of your stereotypical cup of coffee. The honeycomb infused water added slight notes of caramel and a light sweetness, and made for a very enjoyable cup.

And as if that wasn’t enough bang for your $20, you also get a cup of coffee or tea to go with your meal.

KEDGEREE OF QUINOA, SMOKED OCEAN TROUT, EGG, GREEN BEANS, HARISSA and GOATS CHEESE PANNA COTTA, $16.50Kedgeree of Quinoa, Smoked Ocean Trout, Egg and Green Beans, topped with Goat’s Cheese Panna Cotta, $16.50

We also got to try another dish off their breakfast menu – a Kedgeree of quinoa, smoked ocean trout, egg and green beans, topped with goat’s cheese Panna Cotta, $16.50. Classically, Kedgeree – thought to be of Scottish or Indian origin – is made with rice, smoked haddock and spiced with curry powder, before being finished with a cooked egg. In this case, they’ve chosen instead to use quinoa and smoked ocean trout, and the cooked egg has been cut up and mixed through the quinoa base. The goat’s cheese panna cotta provided an extra touch of moisture and theatre – it sat as a wobbly rectangle when the plate was set down in front of me, and the warmth from the bowl of quinoa melted it into a creamy sauce that mixed through easily, and added a creaminess and tang that isn’t usually a part of traditional Kedgeree.

Single Origin Roasters are already synonymous with great quality – they have made an impression on me with their service, food, and coffee – but in terms of the Good Food Month deal that they’ve got going, it’s also crazy value for money. I’d suggest taking advantage of it while you can – it’s only going to last till the end of October!
